Paying to submit a period

The one-off fee a company pays to file a period: how much, when you are asked, how to pay and where to find the receipt.

A company that files for itself pays one fee for each accounting period. You are asked for it the first time you open Corp Tax Submission or Companies House Submission for the period, and not before: everything up to that point is free.

If your company is managed by an accountant firm in Tax Optimiser, you are never asked to pay. The firm uses one of its credits instead.

The fee

PeriodFeeWith VAT
Standard£10.00£12.00
Dormant£5.00£6.00

The dormant rate applies when the period is marked as dormant. One payment unlocks both filings for the period, and you can send amended versions later without paying again.

Making the payment

  1. Open the period and choose Corp Tax Submission or Companies House Submission.
  2. The Pay to submit this period page shows the fee, the VAT and the total.
  3. Click Continue to secure checkout. You are taken to Stripe to pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  4. When the payment succeeds you come straight back to the submission you were opening.
The Pay to submit this period page: submission fee Standard 10.00, VAT 2.00, total due today 12.00, and a Continue to secure checkout button

A dormant period shows the lower fee.

The payment page for a dormant period: submission fee Dormant 5.00, VAT 1.00, total 6.00

Cancel and return takes you back without paying. Nothing is charged until you complete the Stripe page.

Receipts and what you have paid

Open Settings and choose Billing. Submission payments lists each period you have paid for, with the amount, the VAT and the date. Download opens the Stripe invoice, which is your VAT receipt.

Paid for the wrong period?

If you paid against one period and meant another, and nothing has been filed for it yet, use Move on the payment to switch it across. See Moving a submission payment to another period.

Common questions

Do I pay separately for Companies House and HMRC?

No. One fee for the period covers the accounts to Companies House and the CT600 to HMRC.

Can I prepare everything before paying?

Yes. The trial balance, the accounts, the computation and the document previews are all free. You pay only when you open a submission.

HMRC rejected my return. Do I pay again to resend it?

No. The fee covers the period, however many times you submit.

Do I pay again for an amended return?

No. Amended accounts and amended returns for a period you have paid for are included.

Can I get a refund?

Contact support with the company name and the period. Refunds are handled case by case.

I paid but the page still asks for payment. What now?

The payment page updates as soon as Stripe confirms the payment, usually within seconds. Reopen the submission; if it still asks after a few minutes, contact support with the period and the time of the payment and do not pay twice.

The short version

Paying to submit a period — in brief

A company filing for itself pays 10 pounds + VAT for each accounting period, or 5 pounds + VAT if the period is dormant.

You are asked the first time you open the Corporation Tax or Companies House submission. Preparing and previewing are free.

One payment covers both filings, resubmissions and amendments for that period. Payment is by card through Stripe.

Receipts are under Settings, Billing, Submission payments. A payment made against the wrong period can be moved if nothing has been filed.
